Protein coffee is a staple of my mornings. In fact, it's one of the main things I look forward to when my alarm goes off. Adding some protein to your coffee is quick, easy, filling and super beneficial for your health. Let me explain.
Consuming Protein at breakfast increases the release of satiety hormones, making you feel fuller than a typical breakfast of say, toast and cereal. They say breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and in a way that is true, but only if you're eating the right food and getting proper macronutrients.
When you eat roughly 30 grams of protein within an hour of waking up, you are actually setting your body up for success by curbing your appetite and decreasing the desire the eat empty calories like bagels, cereal, toast, etc. You can quite literally lose weight by consuming 30 grams of protein in the morning as your body uses more calories to metabolize protein as compared to fats and carbohydrates.
Of course, not everyone can have their personal chef whip them up a protein filled omelet every morning right? (#goals). Most of us have the get up, get out the door, and get to work. But we all have time to grab that first cup of coffee before we leave for the day. So, here's my suggestion and my go-to breakfast concoction.
Protein Filled Coffee
All you need to create a delicious cup of protein coffee is the ability to brew a cup of coffee (duh), some High Quality Protein Powder, Coconut Oil, and either a blender or an insulated Blender Bottle.
1. Brew your coffee
2. Mix a scoop of your favorite protein powder into your blender or blender bottle
3. Mix a tablespoon of Coconut Oil into your blender or blender bottle
4. Pour in 12 ounces of the brewed coffee.
5. Blend or shake it up.
6. Pour it in your to go mug and continue on your way to work.
Mmmm delicious. It's that simple. Give yourself a little protein coffee in the morning and you'll feel full while setting your body up for success. Rinse and repeat!
Why High Quality Protein Powder and Coconut Oil?
High quality Protein Powder is essential to make sure you're getting benefits from the protein, without consuming extra ingredients that you don't need. Some of my favorite brands are SFH (stands for Stronger Faster Healthier), Ascent, and Primal Kitchen. Watch out for ingredients like Maltodextrin, Artificial Sweetness, Vegetable Oils, Gums, and any excess sugars or carbohydrates. If your protein powder has more than ten ingredients then I would suggest looking at some other brands for your next batch.
I once read a book that claimed God is a Coconut. Although funny, after doing some research and learning more about coconuts, I think that offer was on to something. Coconut Oil contains Medium Chain Triglycerides (MCT's), essentially a very healthy type of fat, that will help you feel energized and full. Not to mention, similar to protein, Coconut Oil speeds up your metabolism and helps to conduct fat loss. Coconut Oil has a huge range of health benefit, and adding tablespoon into your coffee in the morning is a great way to take advantage of this amazing food.
*Important Blender Bottle Note*
Do not try to mix up protein coffee with a plastic Blender Bottle. It will work for the first few times, but eventually the temperature of the coffee with cause the plastic to melt and you'll end up with a protein coffee explosion all throughout your kitchen one morning while giving it a good shake. Trust me, this is first hand experience that I am talking about here! Not fun. Grab a nice insulated Blender Bottle like this one.
Thanks for reading! I hope you found this post informative and helpful in your decision on trying out some Protein Coffee. The benefits and simplicity of making it cannot be overstated.
